There is a Song in My Head... And I Can't Escape from it... Even Here in the Lobby

What is this? Smile and Nod at the Waitress
Today I woke up to the sound of rain drizzling outside my door. The snow that disappeared over the last week or two of warm weather has returned and in an even greater amount and farther down the mountain. Several people have told me that it will snow tomorrow… I don’t know if it’s true, or it they are trying to scare the wide eyed girls from Miami, but… maybe! I did another round of dunklewash and ventured out of my room around 2 to satisfy and silence my growling stomach. It was cold and rainy, but I must say that thermal underwear is one of the greatest purchases I had made here. I bought it a few weeks ago but haven’t used it till now. I don’t think I will be able to part with it for the rest of my time here. It is utterly fantastic! I must buy several before I leave it… to prepare for the snow and for the week of the year in FL when it gets cold enough :)

I spent as much time in the Bavarino enjoying a baked potato… tea…cheese cake… coffee… staring out the window watching the grounds men scoop the piles of soggy leaves the pavement….  During the rain… ick… I waited for a slowing of the drizzle and successfully walked back to my room to search for something English on TV. I lost interest in the BBC News financial show, and Captain Piccard was too painful to see being dubbed in German I shut off the TV and listened to a few more podcasts. I was about to start cleaning when Maya walked in announcing that we were not going to let the weather stop us from enjoying our free day. We were getting a taxi and going to Sonthofen.
Normal looking... but there is dill in the Tzatziki...

I don’t take taxis often.. but today I made an exception and it was worth spitting 10 euros each way. Last week we had walked past a Greek Restaurant .. clichély named Poseidon. Hehe… Today we were craving gyros and garlic and something non-German. Our taxi arrived. The driver wearing baggy t-shirt and a purple hat backwards... sitting at an odd angle tryingto look cool and non-chalant? A German "gansta." 7ish minuted later we walked into Poseidon and sat next to a clichély topless greek statue and started to analyze the menu. For some reason even a Greek menu in Germany looks German. We found some an Octopusalat, Saganaki, and for entrée Gyros. First course… They used parsley and creamy dill sauce…no oregano. No garlic… the Saganaki looked like a lightly breaded and fried cream cheese. Okay… We ate smiling at the waitress and hoping the next course might taste a little more familiar. Maya’s plate came out looking normal… meat with onions, tzatziki, salad, and pita… but mine… I have no idea what version I receive… but it was gyroish meat with melted cheese and a creamy sauce…Never seen this one before. Once again smiling and eating this German creation. Parsley… No Oregano… parsley???????? No Tzatziki? A creamy gravy???????
Lovely texture at the end of each sip
Cognac glass.. note to self: Not for serving Ice cream
Next round… dessert. I tried to explain to the waitress to make an Affogato (coffee drowned vanilla icecream) replacing the espresso with a shot of Greek coffee.. “No.. It’s not possible.” I didn’t try to argue this simple invention so ordered their Affogato and the Greek coffee on the side. Maya was safe and ordered the icecream with raspberry sauce… She was smart. My afffogato came in a cognac glass… with a spoon… ? Odd and awkward to say the least. I drank my espresso and poured in my Greek Coffee… simple enough for me to do… buuuuuuuut my mistake… you could have chewed the coffee since there was so much ground at the bottom… oh well. It was a good laugh… A sad effort…

Poseidon

Nice try

But

I need to find some real Greek food

We left the restaurant and walked to a nearby gas station to buy some milk and call a taxi. The same German “gangsta” drove up… What are the odds…. Oh yeah, we are in Sonthofen. :) We listened to techno, full of our “GermGreek” food, and happy not to be walking up the hill of Steepness on such a dark and drizzly night.

Tomorrow strudel at Café Mayer… We will get it this week :)

Everyday there is a certain song traveling throughout the kitchen (Maroon 5’s Moves Like Jagger).  I always had this tune in my head and never seemed to realize where it came from until the other night. As I was plating in Garde Manger, one of the waiters walked past the station whistling it… After he left, and a minute or two later, the waitress started to walk away humming it. As I was cleaning a table across the room later that night, a chef walked by humming it. As I left the building a waiter a whistled it again. Today I have been humming it and as I got online to lay random songs on YouTube (My Pandora Radio does not work in Germany!!!) guess what was playing tonight while I typed up the above… Yup…. One more time. Yay. Let’s erase it with a new playlist…. A little Adele perhaps :)
