Pass the Spaetzle.. Hold the Flies

Just got back from dinner with Maya. We tried at first to go to Inizios at the bottom of the hill but when we asked for a table they were full… Guess we need to make reservations next time? The Bavarino was closed so we only had one option: go back up the hill and up another hill to Café Mayer. Slightly peeved at the lack of pizza in our future we carried our hungry selves up both hills…  We have both been craving steak and since we are able to recognize more and more of the menu we were able to order what we were craving: Meat. It was our second visit and this time made me want to come back!
Today we sat inside and ooooohhhh what a treat. We savored every bite of our delightful meat, bratkartoffen (pan browned potatoes), and käse spaetzle (Amusing side note here: my Microsoft Office just tried to change my spaetzle to spatula… hehe). There was the old Heidi I saw last time and an old man providing live music. He was playing the accordion and the two of them just sang away… slightly off key but nobody present cared. His comb over was flopped down bobbin at the back of his head as they swayed to the old songs. I so wish I understood German since they must have been singing some interesting songs which made all the other guests laugh heartily. At one point the guests (in the other room) held hands and swang singing along.
Our only trouble throughout the meal: Flies…. Everywhere!!!!!!!!!!! Normally I am out on a picnic waving my hands around, but here in Germany they don’t really use window screens. The käse spaetzle is made with strong cheese and we were sitting in a section separate from the other tables so the flies took advantage of our little corner… They came, 6-7 at a time, charging at the food and sticking their little feet everywhere they could. At one point a fly took a swim in some of the sauce on my place and couldn’t get out. He swirled around for a bit and I horrified shoved him and the small corner of sauce off my plate. There were quite a few bodies on the floor and window sill, so I know we weren’t the only warriors in this battle. Maya took the lead swatting the air, the walls, the table, my cup… whatever moved with our dessert menu… But we defended our food all the way through dessert and one of the best apple strudels I’ve ever had. It was a magical apple cinnamon moment… Between that and the steak: I plan on going there often. The old couple sings every Thursday night :)
Music, good story swapping, tasty food…. Even the fly battle all made for a truly great night and probably one of my favorites so far. We were the last guests…. managed to enjoy the cold yet beautiful night time walk back down the hill. The starry sky and the pleasant lack of road lights… We couldn’t see the cow crap we were probably walking over…. Sometimes ignorance truly is bliss..
Crooners and strudel. I’ll fight the flies again for that.

  1. whenever I read your posts I am back in Germany/Switzerland.
I remember walking out of a restaurant once because of the flies. I just do not get why they do not go with the screens. I always used to think of Germany and Switzerland as so hygienic but man oh man ... those *$^%#@% flies!!
I think I shall go through withdrawal once your externship is over and you no longer write of your German experiences.
