And then the first week was over

I couldn’t find the fly. It is hiding for dear life. Oh yes, it knows. What is the life expectancy of a fly anyway? It’s time must be running out right? But I am a very patient person and I will find it…
This morning, we American girls wanted to find out what a German Breakfast consisted of and if it’s worth waking up early for. In order to use the internet we must wait till late at night to go to the lobby when the guests have gone to sleep… After the rush of work and then giddy excitement of internet access, I find it hard to fall asleep when I finally get back to my room. I normally don’t leave my room till about 10:30-11:30. Our discovery: Breakfast here is a pretty normal breakfast of yogurt and granola, brot with sliced wursts and käse (Are you keeping up with my extensive German???  he he). It was good, buuuuut I am not going to jump out of bed if I am super tired.
Since I was already awake, I decided to take a walk. It has been cloudy and drizzly but I after the first hill I was sufficiently warmed up. I walked for about an hour, at first along my familiar route and then the rebel in me wanted to do some “off-roading.” Squishy, mossy ground and a hill of pine trees – I was a jolly little thing. It rained a bit, but I had my handy dandy water proof jacked with a nifty hood featuring an extended front to keep rain from dripping on my face. Another great thing about the jacket: It is bright red! Not only a happy color on a cloudy day, but if I have to go through some Man Vs Wild situation, people will be able to spot me from a helicopter or a search and rescue group. Not that I plan to get myself into that kind of situation, but it is good to be prepared, right?
During my woods “excursion” I found some wild blackberries and blueberries far enough from human walked areas and therefore far enough from dog visits. I couldn’t helps but taste the rain-washed berries, super small but pack full of sweet goodness. I returned to the marked path and went down some rougher routes along a little stream. It is my new favorite trail and I plan to go there often. There aren’t as many people to meet along the way (fewer times of screwing up the German greeting) and instead of flat gravel, it is all pine needles and tree roots so you have a little more to do than just walk (In other words: make sure you don’t trip). It was a great start to my day… If breakfast isn’t worth getting up early for, that certainly is.
Today was good, but I tourneed waaaay too many potatoes, most of which will become mashed potatoes due to their un even “carvedness” My hand was aching with every stroke of the knife. I was relieved when it was time for plating ( for those who don’t know- to tourne a potato is to carefully carve a  potato into a football shape with 7 even sides... at least mine were a half tournes and therefore a half with 5 carved sides. This business is tedious and one of my least favorite need-to-knows of the kitchen.
I am happy to have a day off tomorrow. I can’t believe I have already been here a week. Granted the first four days lasted much longer then the last three, but good grief one week down 11 to go. It will be good to get away from the hotel for a bit and back to the little city.
I am very tired, yawning, and very much done for now. Good night everyone….hmm I am suddenly craving a Wendy’s frosty… Don’t think they have them here… but 11 weeks and one or two days I’ll have one… Happy thought indeed
